Art Therapy & Creating Winter Rituals with Art - How Beautiful Art Can Help With The Winter Blues.
Share
I don't know about you, but when winter draws in and the days get shorter, I really feel it. That low-level heaviness that just sits there, making everything feel a bit harder to navigate.
And here's something I've learned - partly through painting, partly through living in England where winter lasts forever - the colours around you genuinely affect how you feel. Not in some abstract way, but in a real, tangible way that shifts your energy and mood.
That's why I'm so intentional about the art I surround myself with during these darker months. Warm tones lift my spirits. Cool blues bring me calm. It's not just decoration - it's actually supporting my wellbeing.
So I wanted to share a few simple ways you can use art to create little rituals this winter. Nothing complicated, just small intentional moments that make a real difference.
Morning Mindful Gaze
Start your day with two minutes - that's it - looking at a piece of art that energises you. I love 'Whispers of Midwinter' for this because those icy blues with unexpected warm yellows feel like winter light breaking through. Let your eyes wander across the colours. Let them wake you up gently. It's a kinder way to begin the day than scrolling your phone.
Evening Reflection
As the day winds down, spend a few moments with something calming. 'In the Quiet Light' works beautifully here - those gentle pinks and peaches help your mind unwind and prepare for rest. Just sit with it. Breathe. Let the day settle.
Focus Anchor
If you work from home or have a creative space, place an uplifting print where you'll see it during breaks. Something like 'Closer Than You Think' or 'Leap of Faith' - pieces that give you that quick emotional reset when you're feeling stuck or heavy.
The colours themselves do real work here. Warm tones like the yellows and pinks in 'Leap of Faith' bring comfort and positive energy. Soft blues in pieces like 'Echoes in Still Water' encourage genuine calm. When you choose art that resonates emotionally, you're creating a sanctuary that actually supports you - not just looks pretty.
I paint because I know what it's like to live in grey spaces and need colour. To feel heavy and need lightness. To want your home to feel like somewhere you can actually breathe.
If you're struggling with the winter months, maybe it's worth looking at what's on your walls. Sometimes all you need is a bit of intentional colour to shift the whole energy.
