Dorset Landscape - Finding Beauty Along the Worbarrow Path by Dorset Artist Kate Shephard.

There are places that stay with you long after you've left them, places where your soul just seems to exhale. For me, Worbarrow Bay in Dorset is one of those places. Walking the South West Coast Path toward that hidden bay on a warm summer day feels like stepping into possibility itself, and I knew I had to capture that feeling in paint.
The inspiration for 'Along the Worbarrow Path' came from the path itself, the way it winds and curves through the landscape, always leading you forward, always promising something beautiful just beyond the next rise. I wanted to paint that sense of journey, that anticipation, and most of all, that moment when the gorgeous turquoise water finally comes into view, offset by all the vibrant greens around it.
I worked with layers of lime green, chartreuse and soft yellow to create the sense of sun-drenched pathways, letting the composition flow upward naturally, just as the real path climbs toward the coast. Then I brought in those stunning shades of turquoise and deep blue, the colours that make me stop and stare every time I see the sea. The painting isn't meant to be a literal representation, it's an abstraction, an impression of how the place makes me feel rather than how it looks in a photograph.
What I love most about this piece is the way the colours spark off each other, creating little moments of energy and delight. There's depth in the layers, richness in the tones, and those beautiful pecks of blue peeking through that invite you to lean in closer and explore. It has what I call vibrant calm, that balance of movement and peace, energy held within serenity. It feels alive but soothing, like standing at the shoreline where everything just seems to settle into place.
I hope this painting brings a sense of wonder into your space, a window into beauty that lets you escape for a moment into colour and light. In the grey seasons, in the busy moments, I hope it reminds you to breathe a little deeper and remember that beauty is always there, waiting for you to find it.
