How Big Should Wall Art Be Above a Sofa? (And Why the Two-Thirds Rule Changes Everything)
One of the questions I get asked most often is: how do I know what size art to choose for the wall behind my sofa? It's such a good question — and honestly, getting the size right makes all the difference between a wall that looks intentional and beautiful, and one that just feels a bit… off.
The good news is there's a really simple rule that interior designers swear by: the two-thirds rule. Your artwork (or grouping of artwork) should be roughly two-thirds the width of your sofa. So if your sofa is 7ft (2.1m) wide, you're aiming for around 4.5–5ft (1.4–1.5m) of total art width. That might sound like a lot, but trust me — art that's too small above a sofa almost always looks lost.
Take this first image below here as a perfect example. The sofa is around 7ft (2.1m) wide, and the two prints are each 28" (0.7m) — giving a combined width of around 56" (1.4m) with a small gap between them. That sits right in that sweet spot, doesn't it? The art feels anchored to the sofa, the wall feels intentional, and the whole room just breathes.
The second image below shows a slightly larger arrangement — the prints here are 32" (0.8–0.9m) each, which works beautifully when you have a longer sofa or a wider wall to fill. You can see how the art really holds its own and becomes the focal point of the room.
Both images feature my 'Rising Through' two print canvas set — a pair of expressive turquoise abstracts full of movement and energy. They work so well as a pair above a sofa because together they create that sense of flow and connection across the wall, while each piece still stands beautifully on its own.
If you're thinking about wall decor above your sofa and you're not sure where to start, the two-thirds rule is always your friend. And if you'd like me to create a mock-up for your space — just like I did for one of my lovely customers recently — drop me a message, I'm always happy to help.
