Sandbanks Wave — Chasing That Impossible Blue
There is a colour the sea turns sometimes — a turquoise so luminous and alive that it almost doesn't look real. If you've ever stood on a beach and found yourself just staring at it, completely forgetting everything else, then you know exactly what I mean. That colour has always been the thing I love most about the ocean. And for a long time, I wanted to try and paint it.
'Sandbanks Wave' was that attempt. I wanted to capture not just the visual beauty of a wave but the energy of it — the way it builds and surges and curves and crashes with such force and such grace all at once. Working with fluid paint, I let the colours move and swirl together: turquoise, teal, deep navy and soft sandy cream, layering and blending until the composition felt genuinely alive with movement.
Living on the Dorset coast means I'm never far from that feeling. The sea here shifts its mood constantly — calm and glassy one hour, wild and crashing the next — and I find that contrast endlessly fascinating and endlessly inspiring.
The original of this painting sold a little while ago however I have made this beautiful piece of art available as a canvas print, 'Sandbanks Wave' brings that energy into your home in a format that really does it justice. On canvas, the colours have a depth and presence that makes this feel like much more than a print. It suits coastal bedrooms, living rooms, bathrooms and hallways beautifully — and for anyone searching for a truly special gift for an ocean lover, this is one that will stop them in their tracks.
Available framed and unframed in a range of sizes — I do hope it brings a little of that impossible blue into your space.
