A Dorset Daydream: The Story Behind ‘Bramble Bush Bay Shores’

Some places stay with you — their light, their rhythm, their peace. ‘Bramble Bush Bay Shores’ was inspired by one of those places. I painted it after spending time by the Dorset coast, where the world seems to slow down and the soft rhythm of the sea takes over.
I wanted to capture that quiet serenity — not through a literal depiction, but through colour and feeling. Oils allowed me to build soft, blended layers that mimic the hazy beauty of sea air and light on water. The tones of cream, sand, duck-egg blue, and gentle indigo came together almost intuitively, reflecting the calm balance between sea and sky.
What I love most about this piece is its sense of stillness. There’s movement in the brushwork, but it’s the kind that soothes rather than stirs — the gentle pull of the tide, the hush of waves lapping the shore. It’s a painting about breathing deeply, finding peace, and remembering the beauty in simplicity.
When people see ‘Bramble Bush Bay Shores’, I hope they feel transported — even for a moment — to a quiet coastline where the air is light and time feels suspended. It’s a piece that invites reflection and calm, and I think that’s something we all need a little more of in our homes.
