Old Harry Rocks is one of those landmarks that stops you every single time. However many times you've seen it, there's something about that particular stretch of coastline — the drama of the chalk stacks rising from the sea, the wild, changing quality of the light, the feeling of standing at the edge of something ancient and utterly magnificent — that never loses its power. I painted this not as a postcard of that place but as an honest record of how it felt to be there. The breeze, the light just starting to shift, the waves catching the sun as they moved around the base of the rocks. That's what I wanted to hold onto.
I painted 'Old Harry Reflections' in deep, inky indigo and rich burnt umber — a near-monochrome palette that lets the natural drama of the rocks and sea take complete centre stage. The painting is loosely worked and textured, with an honesty in the brushwork that reflects the wild, restless nature of this stretch of coastline. Woven into the sea and the reflections are delicate touches of Pale Gold bronze powder — a specialist material that catches and holds the light in a way that ordinary paint cannot, echoing that particular glitter of sunlight on moving water. As the light in your room changes throughout the day so does the painting — subtle, warm, alive.
