The Shimmering Pier' Swanage Pier Original Oil Painting - Dorset Artwork - 'The Shimmering Pier' is Dorset artwork for anyone who loves the coast with a quiet, deep kind of love — the one who knows the particular pleasure of standing on a pebbled shore watching the light shift across still water, with the Purbeck Hills rising in the distance and the old pier stretching out into the bay. This painting is for the Swanage lover, the Dorset dreamer, the person who closes their eyes and is immediately back there.
This original oil painting was inspired by many happy trips to Swanage with my children — those golden, unhurried days that stay with you long after they've passed. What I've always loved about this view is the extraordinary contrast it holds. The rough, dark, almost geological texture of the rocky shore in the foreground — so raw and present — set against the glassy, luminous stillness of the water beyond and the soft silhouette of the Purbeck Hills dissolving into a pale sky. Swanage Pier stands quietly in between, that beautiful old rickety structure that feels like it's been there forever and somehow always will be.
I painted this in a deliberately restrained palette — soft greys, muted blues and warm neutral tones — because the view itself doesn't need embellishment. What it needs is breath and space, and that's what I've tried to give it. The one departure from restraint is the Rich Pale Gold bronze powder worked into the rocky foreshore and the gentle water reflections — a specialist material that catches and holds the light in a way that ordinary paint simply cannot. As the light in the room changes throughout the day, so does the painting. It's never quite the same twice.
This is a one of a kind original oil painting on stretched canvas, 30x80cm, 3.5cm deep, unframed and ready to hang with D-ring hooks and picture wire. It is part of the Shimmering Shores collection — Dorset in monochrome and gold.
